Record a Downwind Foiling Session on iPhone or Apple Watch

How to record a downwind foiling session with MarinePath on iPhone or Apple Watch, then review and export your track on iPhone.

Choose your recording device

Record directly on iPhone without a watch, or use MarinePath on Apple Watch. Allow location access for GPS recording. Watch workouts also require workout authorization; iPhone recording does not require Health permission. You can start before a GPS fix, but the route only includes usable locations. Downloading map tiles requires an internet connection.

Record on iPhone

Open Record, choose Downwind Foiling from Sport, and tap Start. Check active elapsed time, distance, and current speed in the recording panel. Tap Pause, then Resume to continue or End to finish. Short sessions ask whether to save or discard. Saving opens the session detail, and your track remains in Sessions.

Switching tabs or browsing the map does not pause recording. A Live Activity can show recording status, elapsed time, and distance when allowed by iOS. Background recording can be interrupted by force-quitting or system termination.

Record on Apple Watch

Open Start session, choose Downwind Foiling, and tap Start. Use the workout controls to pause, resume, or end recording. Pausing stops track recording; movement during a pause is not joined into a straight recorded track. When enabled, Apple’s Water Lock prevents accidental screen touches. Unlock it using the Digital Crown as instructed by your watch.

Review the track on iPhone

iPhone recordings save directly to Sessions. Phone and Watch recordings are separate; there is no automatic handoff or merging.

For Watch recordings, keep the watch and paired iPhone nearby with connectivity enabled, then open MarinePath on both devices. Review the saved track in the iPhone Sessions tab, including duration, distance, speed, and available heart-rate statistics. If a track has not synced, check its pending status on the watch and use its retry action.

Keep important tracks

Export important tracks as GPX before deleting the app. Watch sync is not a backup, and reinstalling does not automatically restore sessions. MarinePath supports session tracking and situational awareness; use official nautical charts and appropriate navigation equipment for navigation.
