Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 20, 2026. This policy applies to MarinePath for iPhone and Apple Watch and this website.

Location and workouts

With your permission, MarinePath uses location to show your position, follow you on the map, and record GPS workouts. Recorded tracks can include coordinates, timestamps, altitude, speed, and available heart-rate measurements.

iPhone recordings are stored locally. Watch recordings are transferred to your paired iPhone using Apple's connectivity services. A user-started iPhone recording uses background location until you end or discard it. When allowed by iOS, a Live Activity displays recording status, elapsed time, and distance outside the app. MarinePath does not require an account and does not upload your recorded routes or Health data to a MarinePath account server.

Apple Health

With your permission, Apple Watch recording reads available workout-related Health data, such as heart rate, and saves workouts to Apple Health. Direct iPhone GPS recording does not require Health permission. GPS tracks remain in MarinePath on your devices; MarinePath does not save GPS routes to Apple Health. Health data is used for recording and reviewing your activities, not advertising. Access is controlled by Apple's Health permissions. Data in Apple Health is also governed by Apple's privacy practices.

Map and search requests

Maps are not entirely offline. Apple map/search services, OpenStreetMap tile services, and our hosted NOAA-derived chart, marker, and depth-sounding services receive requests needed to display the area you view or search for. Requests can reveal that area, your IP address, and technical information such as the app version. Map requests do not send your complete recorded workout or heart-rate history.

The NOAA-derived tile and marker services use Firebase Hosting and Cloud Functions backed by Google Cloud Run. This website uses Firebase Hosting. Backend request and error logs can include requested tile URLs, IP addresses, response status, and timing for service operation, security, and reliability. Our backend's operational log bucket is configured for 30 days of retention. Provider-held security or audit records may follow different retention rules. MarinePath's local cache does not remove provider-side request logs.

Settings, waypoints, and diagnostics

Settings, named waypoints, downloaded map tiles, and local diagnostic information are stored on your devices. Waypoints and applicable settings sync to your paired device. MarinePath's public builds do not automatically upload app diagnostic logs to our server.

If you share a GPX file, screenshot, or diagnostic attachment, its contents go to the recipient or service you select. Such files can contain location or health information. Apple may collect system diagnostics according to your device settings.

Advertising and tracking

MarinePath does not contain advertising or third-party advertising analytics, and does not sell your recorded routes or Health data. This website uses Google Analytics to understand visits and page usage. Google Analytics uses cookies and processes information such as pages visited, visit timing, referring websites, browser and device information, and approximate geographic location derived from your IP address. Website analytics does not receive your recorded routes or Health data. Google signals and advertising personalization are disabled in our website tag. Query strings and URL fragments are excluded from the page and referrer URLs sent by our tag. Hosting providers may also process technical request information. You can block analytics through your browser settings or use Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Your controls and retention

You can change location and Health permissions in Apple's settings. Remove tracks in the iPhone Sessions list, remove waypoints in Settings, and use Clear Map Cache to remove downloaded maps. Reset to Defaults preserves tracks and waypoints.

Local data remains until you remove it or the app's storage is removed. Track and recovery files are excluded from device backups. Deleting a local track does not necessarily delete a track on another device, an exported file, or the associated workout in Apple Health; manage those separately. Provider-side data retention follows the relevant provider's policies.
